Nissan is reportedly discontinuing the Xterra after the 2015 model year because regulation issues will make the sport-utility vehicle too expensive to manufacture.

According to Edmunds.com, the Japanese automaker would have to update the Xterra to satisfy safety regulations and emissions restrictions to continue to offer the SUV model.

Last year, Nissan sold 16,505 Xterras, sales falling 7 percent compared with 2013. Available at Nissan dealerships, the Xterra competes with models such as the Jeep Wrangler, the Buick Encore, the Honda CR-V and the Toyota RAV4, Edmunds reported.

The 2015 Xterra equipped with two-wheel drive gets 16 miles per gallon while driving in the city and 22 mpg on the highway, according to EPA fuel economy ratings. The four-wheel-drive Xterra returns 15 mpg in city driving and 20 mpg for highway driving.

The Xterra featured quiet updates for the 2015 model year, adding NissanConnect app capability, a USB connection port and a new exterior paint option.

A longtime Xterra competitor, the Toyota FJ Cruiser was gradually discontinued in the United States after the 2014 model year but can still be found in Japan, Australia and other select markets worldwide, LeftLaneNews reported.

Nissan is not believed to have another off-roading SUV in the works to replace the Xterra if the model is officially discontinued.
