17-Year-Old Allegedly Steals Car during Driving Lesson

A teenager who was being taught to drive allegedly swiped the learner vehicle and left its owner stranded on the side of a road in Kent, England.

On Monday afternoon, the 17-year-old allegedly sped off in the middle of the driving lesson, leaving the man who owned the car and was teaching him how to complete a three-point turn, the Telegraph reported.

"The 17-year-old from Rochester is believed to have sped away while being guided through a three-point turn, leaving his victim behind on wasteland on the Hoo Peninsula," a Kent police spokesman said.

"Kent Police was notified following the incident, at about 4 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 2, and the Rover MG was spotted later that day in Rochester High Street, where the boy was arrested."

The teenager also allegedly stole a phone and a wallet from the car. After his arrest, he was released on bail until Feb. 24.

The boy was reportedly friends with the man and was being taught how to drive before the incident.

A pair of teenagers in the United States were arrested after a car-stealing spree last month. Cheyenne Phillips, 13, and Dalton Hayes, 18, allegedly stole three cars as well as firearms and money during their two-week trip from Kentucky to Florida, where they were arrested in January to face multiple felony charges. Local authorities seemed primarily concerned with getting the teenagers home safely, and they are not believed to have had malicious intent in relation with the crimes.
