2013 Ford Shelby GT500 was presented on Wednesday at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the company’s Special Vehicle Team (SVT).

“In the past 20 years, SVT has engineered world-class mid-engine supercars, front-wheel-drive performance cars, rear-wheel-drive muscle cars and high-performance on-road and off-road pickup trucks,” said the chief engineer of SVT, Jamal Hameedi.

“There is no other performance house in the world that can match that diverse résumé.”

The new GT500, with its 650 horsepower, shows a significantly large development since the company first offered its 1993 SVT Mustang Cobra, which produced 235 horsepower with a 5.0L V8 engine.

“The new convertible shaved nearly 3.5 seconds off its lap time at Sebring International Raceway compared to the 2011 and 2012 models”, Ford wrote.

Ford SVT has produced around 210,000 cars and trucks with more than seven different names.
