NASCAR Racing Driver Jeff Gordon to Retire After This Season

In a short, but simple tweet this morning, race car icon Jeff Gordon announced that he will conclude his championship run at the conclusion of the 2015 NASCAR season:

Gordon did not announce his next plans, although it's fairly clear that the 23-year racing veteran will not completely cut his ties with the sport. He began his pro racing career in the early 1990s, and is a multiple-time nominee to lists of NASCAR's most prolific drivers.

Outside of racing, Gordon has maintained the role of team co-owner and respected driver—as well as actor and good sport, as seen in last year's collaboration with auto blog Jalopnik.
