The all-new 2015 Alfa Romeo 4C Spider revealed today at the Detroit Auto Show builds on a 100-year legacy to offer Italian style in a mid-engine model with a top speed of 160 mph.
What is it?
While it's a new offering, the Spider draws influence from iconic Alfa Romeo models including the aluminum-bodied 8C 2900 B Touring from 1938; the 1900 C52 "Flying Saucer" built in 1952; and the famous 33 Stradale from 1967, Fiat Chrysler said in a statement.
"And now it is the 4C Spider's turn to deliver the driving thrill, performance and unforgettable emotion that only an Alfa Romeo Spider provokes," the automaker said.
The supercar seats two and runs on an all-aluminum 1750cc turbocharged and intercooled engine that generates 237 horsepower and peak torque of 258 pound-feet. It boasts a zero to 60 acceleration time of 4.1 seconds.
What's new?
Besides a century of Alfa Romeo history, the Spider follows the 8C Competizione sports car, 8C Spider and 4C Coupe. It also builds on the soft-topped, 240-horsepower 4C Spider Concept seen at the Geneva Motor Show last March.
Inside, the 4C Spider features up-to-date technology with a 7-inch vehicle information display and Bluetooth capability, while the exterior lets buyers choose between four all-new wheel designs, including staggered-fitting 17- by 7-inch front wheels and 18- by 8-inch rear alloy wheels in Silver or Dark.
Depending on the buyer's performance needs, the Spider can also be fitted with 18- by 7-inch front wheels and wider 19- by 8.5-inch rear forged wheels in Silver or Dark Grey.
Most fascinating feature?
An important touch for the Spider is the open-air roof attaching on its carbon fiber windshield frame. It comes standard in cloth and will be available as an option in exposed carbon fiber hardtop.
Can I buy it?
The Alfa Romeo 4C spider comes to dealerships in the United States and Canada this summer.
