Toyota Recalls 25,500 Sienna Minivans in US for Detaching Part

Toyota is recalling around 30,000 Sienna minivans from the 2015 model year worldwide, the automaker announced Wednesday.

The recall affects an estimated 25,500 vehicles in the U.S. as well as around 2,000 in Canada, 1,600 in Mexico, 130 in Korea and 18 vehicles in Germany.

Toyota is not aware of any injuries or deaths in connection with the campaign, which the automaker called a voluntary safety recall.

The Siennas have plastic hand grips attached on either side of the second row above the windows that can detach and cause injury. The assist grips were designed to be handholds when passengers enter and exit the vehicle, the New York Times reported.

Because they are installed close to a side-curtain air bag, the plastic grips can detach and could hit a vehicle occupant in the event of a crash, according to the automaker.

Frontal air bags protect the driver and front passenger during a crash; in comparison with the front, side-curtain air bags usually deploy with much less force.

Affected owners will be notified by mail. For the recall, Toyota dealers will make a change to the headliner under the plastic hand grips for free.

Customers can call their local dealerships, go to www.toyota.com/recall or call Toyota Customer Service at 1-800-331-4331 for more information.
