Honk App Promises Fast, Convenient Roadside Assistance

Honk is the latest app that promises roadside assistance at the press of a button.

Coming from a Santa Monica, Calif.-based startup, Honk connects drivers with tow trucks and other services and gives them a guaranteed maximum price and an estimated arrival time, the Los Angeles Times reported. Drivers can tell Honk what problem they are experiencing, such as a flat tire or a stalled car, and be connected with a driver.

Honk founder Corey Brundage, 34, who has founded several startups, came up with the idea last year after getting frustrated by how long it takes to find a towing service and nail down a price.

When his fiancée's car stalled, Brundage went to help her and took an Uber vehicle.

"There's a button I can push to get a taxi in two minutes, but when I really need help on the side of the road, there's no button for that? That stuck with me," he told USA TODAY.

Requests start at a minimum of $49, and the service will be available 24/7 in all 50 states.

According to Honk, 20,000 tow truck drivers have signed up with the app, which competes with rivals such as RepairPal and Urgent.ly.

The website touts arrival times that are often "50 percent faster" than other roadside assistance services, with 15-30 minute ETAs frequently provided in urban areas.
