2014 Los Angeles Auto Show: Ford Explorer Adds 2.3-Liter Engine

The updated Ford Explorer made its worldwide debut Tuesday at the Los Angeles Auto Show, the new version marking the model's 25th anniversary of being America's bestselling sports utility vehicle.

What is it?

The Explorer is the most popular SUV in the U.S., selling more than 7 million vehicles since it launched in 1991. It's geared toward families, offering a spacious interior that seats seven.

What is changed?

The 2016 update gets a new 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine that generates at least 270 horsepower and at least 300 pound-feet of torque. Available on the base, XLT and Limited series, the 2.3-liter option replaces the 2-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder on the current model.

The updated Explorer is also more tech-savvy, offering new features such as front and rear cameras, park assistance systems and USB ports inside the cabin.

EPA estimates for fuel economy haven't been released yet, but Ford promises that the new Explorer will continue to get solid mileage. The current model equipped with the 2-liter engine option boasts an EPA rating of 28 highway miles per gallon.

Can I buy it?

The new Ford Explorer goes on sale next summer. The automaker hasn't yet released official details on cost, but the current lineup is priced between $30,000 and $43,000.
