Uber's next attempt to branch out from ride-sharing will be in food delivery services, the company has announced.
From today until Sept. 5, the taxi service will be testing "UberFRESH," a program that will purportedly deliver meals from local restaurants in 10 minutes or less, a Forbes contributor reported.
Each of the daily meals listed in an Uber blog costs $12, the offerings available from Tuesday to Friday include salads, soups and a sandwich. The meals additionally include a complimentary chocolate chip cookie from a nearby bakery.
Customers in the Santa Monica area can order through the Uber app from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on weekdays. Delivery doesn't cost extra, but the customers will have to go outside to meet the Uber driver and get their food.
Uber has been busy experimenting with new programs to supplement its app-based taxi service. Also this year, Uber has ventured into delivering basic drugstore items in Washington, D.C., introducing a courier service for some of New York City and providing private chefs on-demand for one day in the Hamptons.
Investors have been especially interested in same-day food delivery services in the past year, according to Mashable, which reported that several startups have had funding rounds in eight figures.
Depending on how well the program is received, UberFRESH may be extended in the Santa Monica area and then eventually expanded to other Uber locations.
