Samsung Electronics unveiled an updated version of its flagship smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S5, today, Feb. 24, at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

The tech company also debuted a new smart watch and fitness brand as well, proving that the "battleground for innovation" is changing from hand to the wrist, according to Reuters.

The Galaxy S5 will be available in April, and includes features like a bigger screen than the Samsung Galaxy S4, along with improved 16-megapixel camera, an upgraded version of its Knox security system, and better protection against dust and water.

The S5 is approximately 5.1-inches, compared to the S4's 5-inch display, according to Samsung.

"In your hands, a smartphone has never felt better," said Samsung executive Jean-Daniel Ayme at the event.

The S5 features a battery that supports 12 hours of video playback, and 10 hours of web browsing. The improved camera features an auto-focus that takes just 0.3 seconds, and HDR Rich Tone, that controls the exposure of images, according to Samsung.

Selective Focus is another new feature, which will allow users to choose what to focus on in a picture.

The phone will be available with either 16 GB, 32 GB or 64 GB of storage.

Samsung also equipped the new phone with a fingerprint scanner on the home button, which had been a rumored feature for a number of months and reported by a countless media outlets.

The fingerprint scanner allows users to unlock the device and provide security credentials with just a swipe, according to Samsung.

Samsung feels the new device will help it compete with rivals like Apple and other Chinese companies set to introduce new smartphones later on this year.

The top selling smartphone maker in the world started a trend a little less than six months ago for wearable devices that link to mobile phones with its innovative Galaxy Gear watch.

Since then, rivals like Huawei and Sony have taken notice and introduced plans for their own wearable devices.

Samsung's Gear 2 runs on the Tizen OS, instead of Google's Android software and is capable of tracking a wearer's heart rate, according to the company. It includes infrared LED, meaning the watch can also be used as a TV remote, and can sync with 17 different Galaxy devices.

The battery lasts three days, compared to the original Gear, which lasted one day on a single charge, according to Samsung.

The Samsung Gear Fit comes with a custom designed curved screen and includes a heart rate monitor, and a pedometer.

All three devices will launch in 150 countries starting April 11. Prices have not been provided just yet.
