Hugh Jackman has been cast as the villain in Joe Wright's upcoming live action version of the classic "Peter Pan" story. But he won't be playing Captain Hook.

Wright, who is known for directing lush period films like "Anna Karenina," has envisioned Blackbeard as the villain in this story, Entertainment Weekly reported.

"There is a reason that Hugh is known and loved the world over," Warner Bros. Pictures Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution president Sue Kroll said in a statement provided to EW. "He is uncompromising in his dedication to every role, and we are all thrilled to be working with him again."

The "X-Men" and "Les Miserables" actor will take on the Blackbeard role, while Garrett Hedlund will play Captain Hook, who will be a more sympathetic character in this film.

The crucial character of Peter Pan hasn't been cast yet, but Jason Fuch's screenplay casts the boy who never grew up and Captain Hook as allies in the beginning.

The new film, which is currently titled "Pan" on its IMDB page, is slated for a July 17, 2015 release. The IMDB synopsis calls the film an "origin story" and only lists Jackman and Hedlund on the cast list so far.

"Pan" will fill the release slot earlier intended for the "Batman vs. Superman" project, which has been pushed back nine months for a May 2016 release.

"We know that there is already great anticipation building for the next Super Hero film from Zack Snyder, and we are equally eager to see what he has in store for Superman and Batman as they share the big screen for the first time ever," Dan Fellman, Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution, said as quoted by EW.

"The summer release corridor is also perfect for Joe Wright's ambitious new Peter Pan adventure, reimagining the ageless story of the beloved and forever-young hero for audiences worldwide."
