Volkswagen sold over 9 million vehicles in 2013, topping a sales record set in 2012, according to a company press release.

"In total, our Group delivered over 9.7 million vehicles to customers last year, ranging from small city cars to heavy trucks, more than ever before," said Group Board Member for Sales Christian Klingler, according to the press release.

In December, VW sold 833,000 vehicles, a 6.3 percent increase compared to the same month in 2012.

World brands delivered approximately 3.65 million vehicles on the overall European market from last January through December.

Deliveries in North America from January through December increased 5.6 percent, according to the press release.

Volkswagen Passenger Cars sold 5.93 million vehicles during 2013, whereas Audi sold 1.58 million worldwide.

"Across the board, all brands contributed to these very positive results which are a very good achievement in light of the difficult conditions in markets all over the world," said Klingler according to the press release.

Porsche, which became a Volkswagen brand in Aug. 2012, sold 162,000 vehicles last year according to the press release.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles delivered 551,900 vehicles last year as well.

The automaker is already saying they expect similar results by the end of 2014. With Europe stabilizing, and the U.S. economy slowly increasing, VW shouldn't have a hard time reaching their goals this year.
