General Motors announced this week that all options of the 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 have earned five-star safety ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, according to a GM press release.
The Silverado and Sierra trucks earned five stars in the side crash and frontal crash tests conducted by the NHTSA.
Each vehicle earned four stars in the rollover crash test, according to the company press release.
"All cab configurations of the Silverado and Sierra 1500 series now have the highest possible overall vehicle score," said General Motors in a statement. "These models are the first pickup trucks to receive the five-star NHTSA overall vehicle score for safety since the implementation of more rigorous requirements for the 2011 model year."
The two trucks compete with similar vehicles like the Ram 1500 and Ford F-150.
Some safety features found in each truck includes: lane departure warning, rearview camera, 360-degree sensor system, forward collision warning, lap belt pretensioners, and six standard airbags, according to GM.
Seats designed to vibrate to warn the driver of potential trouble on the road can also be found in the trucks.
"We've designed the vehicle structure, strategically placed high-strength steel and developed the occupant restraint system to achieve high levels of safety performance," said Gay Kent, GM general director of Vehicle Safety and Crashworthiness, in a statement, according to the press release.
