The 56th Grammy nominations have been announced. In a year that The Recording Academy calls "one of the most diverse," Jay-Z scored the most nominations with nine.

Coming in close behind Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar; Macklemore & Ryan Lewis; Justin Timberlake and Pharrell Williams each brought in seven nods, while Drake and mastering engineer Bob Ludwig are up for five awards.

Lorde's "Royals" was also a leader, earning the 17-year-old pop star three nominations for Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance.

"Roar," the lead single from Katy Perry's third record, "Prism," brought the California-born songstress double nods for Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance.

Despite the criticism that Perry's "Roar" and Sara Bareilles' earlier-released "Brave" have a similar sound, both artists did well in the nominations.

Bareilles received a well-earned Best Pop Solo Performance nomination for "Brave," while her latest effort, "The Blessed Unrest," is nominated for Album of the Year.

Country-pop chameleon Taylor Swift garnered two nominations: Album of the Year and Best Country Album, both for "Red," her fourth record. The 23-year-old songstress has won seven Grammys to date with 2009 being her biggest year, when Swift garnered four trophies.

Newcomers Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, who have been prevalent on the music scene for about a year, were acknowledged in the Best New Artist category. The rap duo is also up for Song of the Year for "Same Love" and Album of the Year for "Heist."

"Up until a year, a year and a half ago, we were an undergrounded rapper that only a small percentage of the population had heard," Macklemore told MTV News. "And to be here, and to reach this scale, I would have never thought that our music would affect this many people and be heard by this many people. It's the highest honor; it's the peak of what you strive for in terms of being recognized for the music that you make."
