Just in time for the holidays, a classic family film is making headlines nearly 50 years after its release.
"The Sound of Music," the 1965 hit musical starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, can be revisited by fans who purchase original costumes from the movie that are up for auction, Entertainment Weekly reported.
Fourteen costumes from the Oscar-winning film will be sold on Dec. 21 by California auction house Profiles in History. The lot's worth is estimated at $150,000-$250,000 and could go for more--an auction of costumes from the film sold last summer went for more than $1.5 million.
Pulled from the Western Costume Company's 6,000-piece "Star Collection," the lot includes costumes worn by actors playing the von Trapp children as well as the jacket and pants worn by Plummer as Captain von Trapp at the concert in the film's final sequence.
The "Hollywood Auction 62" lot also comprises photographs from early American movies, including a set of five Clara Bow photos and a portrait of Cecil B. DeMille; proof prints of Marilyn Monroe in "Bus Stop" and the striped jacket worn by Dick Van Dyke as Bert in "Mary Poppins."
The 1965 musical has also been the subject of recent buzz because of the NBC live special airing on Dec. 5. Carrie Underwood will star as Maria in the one-night televised special, will be like "going to a Broadway show, but you're in your living room," she told The Associated Press.
The project will also star Tony winners Audra McDonald, Laura Benanti and Christian Borle, who round out the cast as Mother Abbess, Elsa and Max, respectively.
"The Sound of Music Live!" reportedly is not intended to be a remake of the film, but a unique television experience. Underwood, who arrived in New York three weeks early to prepare for rehearsal, was apprehensive about doing something she hadn't done before but remembered she was not alone.
"None of us have," she said. "This is a live show on TV. So this is definitely a challenge for all of us."
