The Italian Renaissance is coming to this year's Los Angeles Auto Show.
Inspired by Michelangelo's work in the Sistine Chapel, artist Nicola Verlato will paint his own Italian masterpiece on the ceiling of a Fiat 500L from Nov. 20-25 on the showroom floor, Chrysler announced in a press release.
The painting, which Verlato will execute while lying on his back, will be an homage to some of Michelangelo's work on the Sistine Chapel ceiling. The Fiat 500L will be exhibited for the rest of the show, which will run through Dec. 1.
"The FIAT brand is about immersing oneself in Italian style, design and culture," Olivier Francois, chief marketing officer at Chrysler and head of the FIAT brand worldwide, said in the press release. "We wanted to play with this concept by taking one of the most far-reaching pieces of old world art and combining it with the iconic new design of the Fiat 500L."
Verlato's artistic process will also be available for streaming online at the end of each day for anyone unable to attend the show.
To prep for the art project, a red Fiat 500L model will be tricked out with a special fiberglass "ceiling" that is coated to absorb paint as well as a special floor that will allow the artist to move and swivel as needed. The vehicle has a tan and dark grey interior, which was made more spacious with the removal of the seats to give Verlato enough room to paint.
Born in Verona, Italy, Verlato had his first show at age 15 and studied at the University of Venice. He now lives in Los Angeles and his work is shown in galleries worldwide.
