Ford Motors is calling back 204,448 of its Ford Edge and Lincoln MKZ crossovers in the U.S. and Canada to address corrosion issues in some brackets near the fuel tank that could lead to a gas leak and fire.
The recall covers 2007-2008 Ford Edge and its luxury companion, according to the automaker. Only ones sold or registered in 21 eastern and Midwestern states are affected.
The issue revolves around reinforcement brackets at the point where the fuel tank is connected to the vehicle that can corrode. Once they do, there could be a fuel leak, which could turn into a fire if the vehicle comes in contact with an ignition source, according to Ford.
Owners may smell gasoline, notice a leak or see the "check engine" light illuminated on the dash, if there is an issue.
Ford added that it is aware of one fire as a result of the issue, though no accidents or injuries as a result.
The recall covers Edges and MKXs built from June 15, 2006 to Sept. 22, 2008. All affected vehicles were made at Ford's Oakville, Mich., assembly plant.
Of those recalled, 186,024 vehicles can be found in the U.S. and 18,424 in Canada.
The recall covers vehicles originally sold or registered in Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia and Wisconsin in the U.S.
Dealers will inspect the fuel tank and either repair or replace it at no additional cost to the owner, according to Ford.

The automaker has yet to announce a notification schedule. Owners should be notified though sometime in November.
If you're an owner of one of the aforementioned vehicles it wouldn't hurt to bring it to your local mechanic to get it checked out before receiving your recall notice.
