Chinese government officials have made surprise visits to Microsoft offices in China, according to a spokeswoman for the company, who spoke with Reuters.
The spokeswoman failed to give the reason for the inspections however.
China's State Administration for Industry & Commerce has declined to comment so far regarding the inspections.
They have reportedly made visits to Microsoft offices in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu.
Recently, Microsoft has been the main focus of anti-U.S. technology sentiment in China since U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) contractor Edward Snowden released widespread spying programs, like PRISM, which used U.S. company's technology for cyber espionage, according to Reuters.
"We aim to build products that deliver the features, security and reliability customers expect and we're happy to answer the government's questions," the Microsoft spokeswoman said in an emailed statement.
She declined to give any further information.
The largest software company in the world has had a hard time in China lately, including a call by state media for "severe punishment" against American tech firms for helping the U.S. government to steal secret and monitor China, according to Reuters.
Activists said earlier in July that Microsoft's OneDrive cloud storage service was being disrupted as well.
Back in May, central government officers were told not to install Windows 8, which is Microsoft's latest operating system, on its new computers.
The ban has not been lifted since, as more than one procurement notices since then have now allowed the OS.
The company has recently pushed forward with plans to release its Xbox One console in China this September.
Microsoft will start selling its latest console this September.
The country's third-largest telecommunications company said that the Xbox One will become the first console to be released in mainland China since the government banned console sales in 2000.
The price of the console has not been decided yet.
