Foursquare has unveiled a new logo as the company completes the transition of check-ins to Swarm this week.
With its crisp new "F," Foursquare is emphasizing that it is solely a search app after being broken into two platforms, Bloomberg Businessweek reported.
A survey earlier this year revealed that only 5 percent of Foursquare users employed the app for both checking in and searching, so the company decided to make Foursquare an app for recommending locations and to introduce Swarm to connect with friends.
Focusing on recommending restaurants and other spots in the area puts Foursquare in direct competition with Yelp; however, Foursquare says it will specially tailor its recommendations to each user.
"Every place you go now when you do a search by location, you get the exact same list as everyone else," said Jon Steinback, Foursquare's vice president for product experience, as quoted by Businessweek. "Why should you and your dad get the same bar recommendations?"
The new Foursquare logo comes from the same Brooklyn-based branding firm that designed Swarm's look.
Foursquare is working to complete the split into two apps this week. While more than 75 percent of users have already adopted the new app, Foursquare began to move all check-ins to Swarm on Thursday, according to a company blog post.
"Don't worry; all your past check-ins, all your friends, all your photos, they're all automatically in Swarm," said the post.
Businessweek points out that Foursquare was "in dire need of an upgrade" and had fallen to a 1.5-star average rating in the App Store.
Foursquare hopes the division into two apps will free up development for a better user experience.
"The more we played with that idea the more we realized that there was a ton we wanted to do on both sides that we can't do if they are married together," Jon Steinback, Foursquare vice president of product experience, told The Verge in May. "It's like we were in a three-legged race and each side was slowing the other side down."
