A large whale was found for the second time in California this week.
The fin whale was found at Imperial Beach in San Diego, according to CBS8. It is believed to be at least 50-feet-long and a target for predators.
"This whale is still chumming for sharks even though it's on the beach. If you're a surfer, I would not surf anywhere near that whale," said Dr. Michael Domeier of the Marine Conservation Science Institute (MCSI), according to the station.
Visitor Masako Hikida called the whale "beautiful," though most beachgoers agree that the whale smells, according to 10News.
The whale is the same one discovered in Point Loma last week, according to CBS8. MCSI wanted to use the towed whale as bait to study sharks, but the state wouldn't allow it.
A day later, the tow rope broke.
"When the rope broke Friday at that point we're like we're done. We couldn't do what we wanted to do anyway," said Domeier, according to CBS8.
The whale's fate has yet to be determined, according to Susan Chivers, a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) biologist, who spoke with The San Diego Union-Tribune.
"We are in conversations with the [Border Field State Park] manager as to what to do next," Chivers said, according to the paper. 'They asked me what would be the best thing to do. I said the only sure way for a whale not come back is to either bury it, or just let it rot in place. In an urban environment, that basically means taking it to a landfill."
Authorities feel that there won't be any sanitation issues due to the presence of dead whale, according to ABC News.
For the time being it's up to visitors whether or not they want to deal with the smell in order to see the massive whale.
'"They're the ones who told us we couldn't do what we wanted to do, and it's now on their beach," Domeier said, according to the Union-Tirbune,'so now it's the state's problem."
