GM Issues 30th Recall for 500 Pickups, SUVs with Faulty Airbags

General Motors has announced yet another potential safety hazard in its vehicles, issuing a recall for around 500 full-size pickup trucks and SUVs from model years 2014 and 2015.

The automaker has issued a stop sale for the vehicles, which are still at the plant or at dealer lots, due to potentially problematic airbag modules, USA TODAY reported. The 500 trucks included in the recall are not yet in owners' hands, and no other vehicles are known to be affected by the issue, according to the automaker.

"The announcement of this recall demonstrates GM's commitment to quickly identifying recall conditions to minimize the impact on customers," said GM spokesman Alan Adler, as quoted by USA TODAY.

The announcement marks GM's seventh recall this week and its 30th for the calendar year. In the wake of a massive recall for ignition switch issues, the beleaguered automaker has been focusing on repairing potential problems and renewing its image. The 2.6 million-vehicle recall for ignition switch problems in various small cars has been connected with at least 13 fatalities.

GM announced this week that global product chief Mark Reuss will head a five-member team of executives to decide when and if GM vehicles should be recalled. The change shifts the recall responsibility definitively into GM's top ranks.

The team may have to make more recall decisions soon, as an analyst has said that GM's recall purge could continue into the summer, CNBC reported. The automaker has already recalled around 15 million vehicles this year.

According to Barclays research analyst Brian Johnson, senior officials at GM have been implementing new methods to uncover potential safety issues, which could result in more recalls.

"GM is trying to aggressively issue recalls for items as soon as they learn about it, rather than batching the items for a vehicle and waiting--even if there may be negative optics around such a strategy," Johnson wrote, as quoted by CNBC.
