Mazda North American has opened a recall of its 2014 Mazda 6 over a potential fire risk, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
"In the affected vehicles, it is possible to fill the fuel tank beyond its rated capacity," said NHTSA in its summary of the issue.
Mazda has yet to announce if any injuries, fires or fatalities have occurred as a result of the issue.
Approximately 19,000 Mazda 6 sedans are affected by the recall, according to the NHTSA.
Affected vehicles were manufactured from October 25, 2012 through May 9, 2013.
Mazda dealers are being instructed to add an adapter to the shut-off valve in the fuel tank, according to the NHTSA.
Dealers are also being told to inspect the charcoal canister for the presence of gasoline. If an issue is determined, dealers will make the necessary adjustments, free of charge.
"If the tank is overfilled, gas may flow into the charcoal canister (an evaporative emissions component) and possibly leak from the canister's external vent, increasing the risk of a fire," said the NHTSA in its summary.
The Mazda 6 competes in the same segment as similar vehicles like the Hyundai Sonata, Toyota Camry and Volkswagen Passat.
The Mazda 6 recall has already started.
Owners are encouraged to contact their local Mazda dealers to have their vehicle inspected as soon as possible.
