GM CEO Mary Barra to Discuss Recall Scandal in NY

Apr 15, 2014 03:55 PM EDT | Matt Mercuro

General Motors CEO Mary Barra is scheduled to end the 2014 Automotive Forum taking place in New York City.

The conference will mark Barra's first speech since two congressional hearings earlier this month.

GM was criticized at the hearings for delaying a recall of 2.6 million older-model vehicles that have been linked to at least 13 deaths and over 30 crashes.

Barra will reportedly discuss the "bright spots" of the automaker's business that have been looked over recently due to the recalls, according to MLive.com.

She will also give an update on the automaker's efforts to handle customer concerns regarding the now controversial recall.

GM recalled 2.6 million cars earlier this year for ignition switches that could turn off while the car was still moving. The recall comprises the 2005-'07 Chevrolet Cobalt, 2006-'07 Chevrolet HHR and Pontiac Solstice, 2007 Pontiac G5 and Saturn Sky and 2003-'07 Saturn Ion.

"More than a decade ago, GM embarked on a small car program. Sitting here today, I cannot tell you why it took years for a safety defect to be announced in that program, but I can tell you that we will find out. When we have answers, we will be fully transparent with you, with our regulators, and with our customers," said Barra in her statement to the house committee earlier this month.

Barra took over for former CEO Dan Akerson on Jan. 5. Since then she has been asked to deal with a lot, though she continues to preach customer focus through it all.

The GM CEO will speak at 4:05 p.m.

The fifth annual conference is hosted by J.D. Power and the National Automobile Dealers Association.

Check back once the conference is over to find out what Barra had to say regarding the recall.
