2015 Audi A3 Sedan Earns Top Safety Pick+ Award From IIHS

Audi has confirmed its entry-level 2015 Audi A3 has earned the Top Safety Pick+ Award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The vehicle is the first Audi model to earn either the 2014 Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ award. It is also the first to earn a good or acceptable rating in the small overlap front crash test, the IIHS said in a statement this week.

"The A3 is available with an optional front crash prevention system that qualifies for an advanced rating from IIHS," the IIHS said in a statement. "The system has automatic braking technology that avoided a crash in the Institute's 12 mph test."

The ruling applies for the 2015 A3 with the optional advanced technology package.

Audi's 2015 A3 received "Good" ratings for all IIHS crash tests, like the side test, head restraints test, small overlap front test, and moderate overlap front test.

"In the small overlap test of the A3, the structure held up well, with a minimal amount of intrusion into the driver's space," said the IIHS in a statement. "The dummy's movement was well-controlled and injury measures taken from the dummy indicated a low risk of injury."

The A3 is the only vehicle to feature secondary collision brake assist as a standard feature, according to Audi.

The system was created to automatically brake the vehicle after a collision to prevent a secondary collision.

The vehicle has yet to be rated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration yet.

"(The A3) will offer several advanced technology features which are new to the entry-luxury segment, including: standard Audi pre sense basic system which helps detect when an emergency maneuver is being made and prepares the vehicle and its occupant restraint systems in advance of a possible collision," Audi said in a statement.

The A3 will reach dealerships next month.
