Fiat Chrysler Automotive has confirmed its new 2014 Jeep Cherokee SUV has earned a four-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The rating applies for the two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive options of the Cherokee vehicle, according to the automaker.

The Cherokee received, five stars in the side crash test, four stars in the rollover crash test, and four stars in the front crash test.

Five stars is the highest rating a vehicle can receive for a specific crash test conducted by the NHTSA.

The Cherokee includes 10 standards airbags, like a driver's knee airbag, designed to prevent an injury to a driver's knee in the event of an accident.

The 2014 Jeep Cherokee was also recently named a 2013 Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The automaker designed the new Cherokee to replace the Jeep Liberty in the Jeep lineup, according to Fiat Chrysler Automotive.

Cherokee competes with similar vehicles like the Ford Escape and Honda CR-V.
