Twitter recently purchased over 900 patents and signed a deal with IBM, as it continues its battle against rivals like Facebook and Google, according to Reuters.
The agreement also comes just two months after International Business Machines Corp. accused Twitter of "infringing" three of its patents.
Financial terms have not been outlined yet by either of the companies.
Most analyst agree that the cross-licensing agreement will help Twitter fight similar accusations in the future.
IBM is generally recognized as one of the top research spends and "stockpilers of intellectual property," and a steady leader in patent filings in the U.S.
"This acquisition of patents from IBM and licensing agreement provide us with greater intellectual property protection and give us freedom of action to innovate on behalf of all those who use our service," said Ben Lee, Twitter's legal director in a joint statement with IBM this week, according to Reuters.
IBM has approximately 41,000 patents total, according to Reuters.
Facebook faced similar claims before its own IPO, which took place back in 2012. Since then Facebook has been on a patent-spending spree, with purchases ranging from Microsoft and IBM.
