German luxury automaker Daimler has to be pleased with its Mercedes-AMG car division, as it confirmed this week that it sold the most ever Mercedes vehicles during 2013.

The 2013 record exceeds the 30,000-vehicle goal set by the automaker for 2017, which was outlined back in 2012, according to Bloomberg Businessweek.

Approximately 32,200 Mercedes vehicles were sold during 2013, the most during a single year for the automaker, by far, according to Reuters.

Daimler failed to provide an exact figure for Mercedes-AMG's sales during 2012 but a spokeswoman for the automaker said to Reuters that it sold around 20,000 cars in 2011.

"The extraordinary growth has significantly surpassed our own expectations," Tobias Moers, chief executive of Mercedes-AMG, said in a statement, according to Reuters.

The division was founded as AMG back in 1967.

Mercedes-AMG currently employs over 1,200 people and devotes most of its time to customized Mercedes-Benz-brand vehicles like its well-known race cars.

AMG has sold over 10,000 high-end SLS sports vehicles since 2010, according to Bloomberg. Other vehicles that helped Mercedes' achieve its new sales record include the updated CLS Coupe and Mercedes E-Class sedan.
