Bridging the gap between those who can afford technology and those who can't, Datawind has released a tablet that costs just $38 and is already a hit in India.

The 7-inch UbiSlate 7Ci is the least expensive tablet in the United States with a performance comparable to the first-generation iPad, Yahoo Shopping reported.

The device features 512MB of system memory (RAM) and 4GB of internal storage, along with a microSD card slot that can hold memory cards up to 32GB. The UbiSlate 7Ci also has built-in wireless that supports 3G connectivity.

Described as "light" and "comfortable to hold," the tablet has an embedded sensor to know if the user is holding it vertically or horizontally, Yahoo Shopping reported.

The device's screen has a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels. According to the Yahoo Shopping review, the screen looks good "straight on" but becomes less clear if the user leans left or right.

The tablet supports Google apps and can access the Google Play store.

Some preloaded apps include "DataWind Education (lessons in various subjects and languages), security software, email client and web browser, an ebook reader, Kingsoft Office (a free Microsoft Office alternative), movie editor, games" and more, Yahoo Shopping said.

The device also comes in two pricier versions: the UbiSlate 7C+ tablet, which goes for $79.99 and has an embedded quad-band GSM/Edge modem, and the UbiSlate 3G7, which costs $129.99 and features a 3G modem, GPS, Bluetooth and more.

While the new tablet isn't the equivalent of an iPad or a Galaxy Note, the UbiSlate 7Ci is significant because it breaks barriers.

"Think of all the people who otherwise can't afford a touchscreen tablet--including school boards who could now equip students with these small, thin and lightweight computers," Yahoo's Marc Saltzman noted, adding that "it's hard to deny there's a lot of bang for the buck here."
