A Texas jury has sentenced former Dallas Cowboy player Josh Brent to 180 days in jail and 10 years' probation for his role in a deadly crash that killed his friend and ex-teammate Jerry Brown Jr., according to Reuters.
Earlier this week, the same jury convicted Brent, 25, of intoxication manslaughter for the death of Brown Jr., and could have sentenced him to 20 years in jail.
Brown's mother pleaded to the jury on Jan. 23 to go easy on Brent, claiming that her son "would have agreed with her."
"He's still responsible, but you can't go on in life and hold a grudge. We all make mistakes and have to be forgiven. I'm sure that's what Jerry would have wanted," Stacey Jackson said, according to Reuters.
The two spent the night drinking at a club in December 2012 before the incident took place. Brent supposedly drove his Mercedes 110 mph when he hit a curb on a state highway, causing the vehicle to flip and then catch fire.
Brent's blood alcohol level was 0.189 when the incident took place, which is double the legal limit in Texas, according to Reuters.
The 320-pound defensive tackle had around 17 drinks the night of the incident.
"We understand the very serious nature of this situation and express our concerns for all of the families and individuals that have been affected by the tragedy of Jerry Brown's death," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said in a statement.
Jurors took nine hours over the course of two days to convict Brent.
