Chevy Spark Outperforms 10 Small Cars During IIHS Test

Most new small cars sold in the U.S. performed poorly during a tough crash test conducted recently by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, according to CNN.

Of 11 minicars or subcompacts put through the IIHS's small overlap crash test, only one did well.

The Chevrolet Spark earned an "Acceptable" rating, according to the IIHS. None of the other vehicles tested earned a top rating of "Good."

The Spark is also the only vehicle to earn the IIHS Tops Safety Pick designation.

"We're geeked," said Chevrolet spokeswoman Annalisa Bluhm about the grade, according to USA Today.

Six vehicles tested earned a "Poor" rating, which is the lowest rating the institute gives out. Those six vehicles include the Nissan Versa, Mitsubishi Mirage, Honda Fit, Prius C, Hyundai Accent and the Fiat 500.

Honda debuted a redesigned 2015 Fit in the U.S. last week at the Detroit Auto Show. The automaker has said that that even though the previous model performed poorly during the crash test, it has improved crash performance in its newer models.

The Kia Rio, Ford Fiesta, and Toyota Yaris earned a "Marginal" rating, according to CNN.

"Small, lightweight vehicles have an inherent safety disadvantage," Joe Nolan, a senior vice president for the IIHS, said in a statement, according to USA Today.

Frontal crash tests shows what would happen if a vehicle was in a crash with a similarly-sized vehicle or objects like trees.
