A heavy snowstorm is expected to affect most of the northeast United States this week, and some states could see over 12 inches of snow, according to Reuters.

Snow had already started falling in many states throughout the northeast, but most of it won't come until after sunset and will continue overnight, Kim Buttrick, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Taunton, Massachusetts, who spoke with Reuters.

"The real action is going to get cranked up this evening and during the overnight hours. We'll have heavy snow, windy conditions, reduced visibilities," Buttrick said.

"Arctic temperatures" and strong winds are expected along with the heavy snow, which could make matters worse for commuters on Jan. 3.

Temperatures will drop from 20 to 30 degrees below normal, and record lows are expected in some states as well.

The storm will impact traffic on the I-95 highway between New York and Boston, according to the National Weather Service.

Approximately 1,123 flights were canceled and 1,567 were delayed because of the storm, according to FlightAware.com. Approximately 409 flights have been canceled from Chicago's O'Hare International and Newark's Liberty International Airport reported 280 cancellations.

Blizzard warnings have been issued for Long Island, N.Y., and Cape Cod in Massachusetts. Winter storm warnings have also been issued for New Jersey, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and eastern Pennsylvania.

Schools have also been closing in anticipation of the storm, including Boston public schools, which have been informed to close on Jan. 3, according to Reuters.

"What a New Year's gift, to receive one last snowstorm as mayor," said Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, whose 20-year run will end on Jan. 6.

Anywhere from 3 to 7 inches is expected for N.Y., according to Reuters.

Most schools in the New Jersey and New York areas have announced early dismissals for today and are expecting to be closed on Friday as well.

Currently, at least 100 million Americans were under some form of winter storm warning.

The Weather Channel had called the storm Winter Storm Hercules.
