Chrysler is recalling approximately 522 vehicles equipped with 2.4-liter engines for a potential loss of engine oil pressure that could lead to an engine stall, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The vehicles include the 2014 Jeep Compass and Patriot, 2013 Dodge Avenger and Chrysler 200, according to Chrysler.
"Due to abrasive debris in the balance shaft bearings, these engines may have a loss of engine oil pressure, possibly resulting in an engine stall or engine failure," said NHTSA regarding the issue. "If the engine stalls while driving, it may increase the risk of a crash."
The automaker told safety regulators that the abrasive debris is "consistent with the particles used in polishing tape during the engine manufacturing process for balance shaft modules."
Chrysler said it has not been notified of any accidents or injuries related to the recall.
Chrysler dealers are being instructed to replace the engine balance shaft module, free of charge. The recall will begin later this month.
