Toyota Offers Tire Protection Plans To Cover Damage

Toyota is now offering tire- and wheel-protection plans for drivers whose vehicles were purchased or leased from participating dealerships.

Covering tire and wheel damage from potholes, nails, glass and other road hazards, the plans can be transferred if the vehicle is resold to a third party, Edmunds.com reported.

The plans are available in two packages, which each provide up to five years of coverage. Neither has an aggregate dollar limit or a limit to the number of covered claims.

Replacement tires through the plans must meet the manufacturer's size specifications, and the plans cover for damage resulting from operational or structural failure due to defects in materials or workmanship.

Coverage is available through Tire & Wheel Protection Platinum or Tire & Wheel Protection Platinum Plus. The first plan covers "replacement of any damaged tire, replacement of a wheel if it won't hold a seal with the new tire, reimbursement of as much as $100 of towing expenses to the nearest Toyota dealer and incidental costs, such as labor, wheel weights, valve stems, tire disposal fees and taxes."

The Platinum Plus coverage adds "windshield repair of chips and cracks up to 6 inches in size and paintless dent repair of dings up to 4 inches in diameter."

Coverage pricing varies depending on the vehicle and other factors, and the protection plans are not available in all states.

The average cost of a passenger tire in the United States jumped an estimated 57 percent in the last seven years, according to data from trade publication Modern Tire Dealer.

"We've all had that moment when we hit a pothole, scraped up against a curb, or even had an unexpected blowout," Jim Miller, national manager of product development for Toyota Financial Services, said in a statement. "With our new Tire & Wheel protection plan, we hope we can make life a little easier for our customers by offering an option that will help protect them against the high costs of replacement."
