Apple Launches '12 Days of Gifts' Promotion with New App

Apple users can download the "12 Days of Gifts" app to prepare for the tech giant's upcoming holiday promotion, which will make a freebie available each day Dec. 26 to Jan. 6.

Celebrating the traditional 12 days of Christmas, Apple will give customers a chance to download free apps, songs, books and more, depending on the day, The Washington Post reported.

The promotion has been available for some overseas Apple users in the past, but this year consumers in the United States can join in as well. The app works for phones with the iOS 7 upgrade, which should be about 75 percent of iOS users in the U.S.

The gifts, which will begin showing up on phones and tablets on Dec. 26, will appear at midnight in each time zone and will be available for a 24-hour period before being succeeded by the next freebie.

Apple customers who are traveling during the period may have trouble downloading the gifts, since they need to be in a country or region that matches the billing address of their Apple ID.

The app counts down the days until the promotion and has a list of rules regarding the gifts. One example is the limitations on free movie rentals, which will be available for a month after download but will be valid for only 24 hours after streaming.

Users should also double-check their apps, since any free books will require the iBooks app for download.

Apple is also offering a holiday special for engraving.  Any iPad purchase will include free custom engraving for gifts, and shoppers can get their packages on time for Christmas if they order by Dec. 11.
