"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" and "Frozen" are both box office hits and could even take the titles of the two best Thanksgiving five-day weekends of all time, Entertainment Weekly reported.
"Catching Fire" took in $20.7 million on Wednesday and $14.9 million on Thursday; together, the figures put the new installment in the dystopian series at around $100 million. The haul will more than top the $82.4 million gross that "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" garnered during the same period in 2001.
The film with Jennifer Lawrence reprising her role as Katniss Everdeen will have earned an estimated $290 million after just 10 days in theaters and could even beat the $408 million domestic total pulled in by the original "Hunger Games."
"Catching Fire" now holds the title of best November debut of all time, coming in ahead of "The Twilight Saga: New Moon," which took in $142.9 million when it opened in 2009.
The latest "Hunger Games" installment had the fourth-highest opening weekend of all time, and has likely beaten "The Dark Knight Rises" as the highest 2-D opening ever.
Even with such a worthy contender, "Frozen" is staying strong at the box office as well. The animated film brought in $26.3 million on Wednesday and Thursday, posting a stronger start than fellow Disney musical "Tangled," which earned $19.9 in its first two days after release in 2010.
"Tangled" ended up bringing in $48.8 million during the following weekend. Measuring by this standard, Entertainment Weekly estimated that "Frozen" could bring in more than $64 million for a $90 million five-day start.
It wasn't such a day at the movies for other new releases. The two box office giants apparently crushed competitors "Homefront" and "Black Nativity," which didn't pull in audiences. "Homefront," an action thriller starring Jason Statham, took in a mere $2.8 million in its first few days, while "Black Nativity" struggled with a box office of $1.1 million combined from Wednesday and Thursday.
