The 2014 Maserati Ghibli has been selected as a 2013 Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety, according to a press release.
The Ghibli, which recently launched in North America, starts at $65,000 and features a twin-turbo V6 engine. The foor-door sedan has a "coupe-like" design and furthers the Maserati hallmarks: performance, style and luxury, said the press release.
The new model was chosen as an IIHS Top Safety Pick after undergoing testing that simulates a side impact with a larger car like a sports utility vehicle or a truck. The test also looks at "front moderate overlap impact, roof-crush consistent with a rollover and a rear collision capable of inducing whiplash," according to the press release.
The Ghibli, designed to give "maximum peace of mind for its occupants," passed each round of testing with "good," the highest safety rating.
Equipped with seven airbags, the car's safety system also received five stars from the Euro NCAP crash test regime. Two-stage airbags in the front protect in case of a severe frontal collision, while a knee airbag shields the driver's legs and side airbags protect the passenger.
Both safe and efficient, the Ghibli has hot-formed steel in passenger areas for added safety and aluminum in other parts to keep it lightweight.

"Luxury sport sedan drivers can now enjoy the style and performance expected of a Maserati, and the assurance of its status as a 2013 IIHS Top Safety Pick."
The new vehicle is also covered with a 4-year or 50,000-mile warranty; road-side assistance and loaner car service.
