Over 50 people were killed this weekend in Russia after a Boeing 737 airliner crashed and burst into flames, according to Retuers.
The crash scene is currently under investigation as the cause of the crash, which occurred on Nov. 17, is still unknown.
Locals of Kazan could be seen in news broadcasts wiping away their tears and placing flowers at the airport where the plane crashed. Flags flew at half-mast in the city, which is just 500 miles east of Moscow.
"The plane just fell," said Transport Minister Maxim Sokolov to reporters, according to Reuters. "The plane was vertical, practically vertical."
The Tatarstan airlines flight from Moscow was trying to abort its landing when it went down, killing all 44 passengers and six crew members. Most of the plane was destroyed in the incident.
Video recordings of the crash were not of high quality, making it harder for investigators to determine what happened.
"The main versions are pilot error and technical problems, including equipment failure," Alexander Poltinin, a senior regional investigator, said of the crash, according to Reuters.
The crash raises yet another concern over Russia's poor safety record as its set to host the Winter Olympics in Socihi this February.
The fire was extinguished hours after the crash occurred, but that it could take a couple of weeks for all the dead to be identified in the wreckage, according to Poltinin.
