A Tesla Model S vehicle has been involved in a third fire in the last six weeks, sending its stock down around 7 percent.
Tesla Motors confirmed the fire on its website, saying that it occurred in Smyrna, Tennessee, the same location Nissan Motors makes the Leaf electric car.
The crash occurred on Interstate 24 at around 1:30 p.m., according to *blank.
The automaker has spoken with the driver, who wasn't injured in the fire. The vehicle is registered to Juris Shibayama of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, according to local police.
It has not been confirmed whether the owner was the one driving the vehicle at the time of the fire.
"Our team is on its way to Tennessee to learn more about what happened in the accident," Tesla spokeswoman Elizabeth Jarvis-Shean said in a statement. "We will provide more information when we're able to do so."
Tesla claims the fire occurred due to an accident, not a spontaneous event.
Police aren't sure how fast the vehicle was going, but the driver was able to pullover and get out safely.
"It's possible that it ran over a piece of metal in the roadway," patrol dispatcher Kathy Bryant said. "There was extensive damage."
The first incident occurred on Oct. 1 in Seattle, where as the second took place a month later in Mexico. Neither driver was injured in the earlier accidents, according to Tesla.
