The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has ranked the best car booster seats for children, choosing 19 models as a "best bet" when it comes to safety, CBS News reported.
Highback and backless booster seat models were analyzed in the report, which rated car seats on the best fit.
"Correct belt fit means that the lap belt lies flat across a child's upper thighs and the shoulder belt crosses snugly over the middle of the shoulder," the IIHS report said.
The seats were categorized into best bet, which meant correct fit for an average 4- to 8-year-old child in almost any vehicle; good bet, which meant acceptable fit in most cars; check fit, for when the results varied; and not recommended.
The evaluation included 31 new models, ranging from $18 to $300, 19 of which were categorized as best bets by the IIHS.
Some recommended booster seats in the lower price range included the backless Graco Connext for around $18, the backless Harmony Transit Deluxe at around $25 and the Graco Affix for around $85.
2013 features five good bet and 58 best bet booster seats, the highest number in the study's five-year history.
The IIHS study has helped car seat manufacturers to improve when it comes to safety, meaning that fewer models are not recommended.
"That is largely because manufacturers have taken note of the ratings and work with the Institute to build seats to do what they are supposed to do--elevate children so safety belts that were designed for adults better fit their smaller frames and put lap and shoulder belts in the proper place for the best protection in a crash," according to the IIHS report.
