Authorities found 47 one-liter soda bottles filled with an estimated $10 million worth of methamphetamine during a traffic stop Monday in North Carolina, WRAL reported.
The two men driving the 2010 Dodge Charger which contained 81 pounds of the drug now face charges of trafficking meth.
A Wake County deputy stopped the car on a highway on a window tint violation and noticed the smell of marijuana, according to police. After an investigation that included a drug-sniffing dog, the narcotics were discovered by a K-9 team. The 47 soda bottles contained a liquid that tested positive for meth.
Russell Stanley Lagos-Carmona, the driver, was charged with "trafficking methamphetamine by transportation, trafficking methamphetamine by possession, conspiracy to traffic methamphetamine and maintaining a controlled substance in a vehicle," according to WRAL.
He was also served with an outstanding warrant for failure to appear and was being held in Wake County Jail on Wednesday under a $500,000 bond.
The only passenger in the car, Brayan Sanchez Acosta, 33, of Albertson, attempted to flee the scene on foot but was apprehended. Acosta, who also goes by the name Felipe Renteria-Gomez, was treated for minor injuries he sustained while fleeing authorities.
He was then charged with "trafficking methamphetamine by transportation, trafficking methamphetamine by possession, conspiracy to traffic methamphetamine and resisting, obstructing and delaying a public official." As of Wednesday, he was being held under a $1 million bond.
The incident comes after similar meth-related arrests were made last month, also in Wake County. Deputies found 51 pounds of meth in a 2008 Honda that was pulled over for speeding, ABC11 reported.
The car's three occupants were arrested and charged with drug trafficking; the meth discovered amounted to more than $6.5 million in street value, authorities said.
