Ford is recalling 23,831 Ford Focus Electric and Ford C-Max cars with push-button start due to a defect with the a door chime that doesn't work when the driver's door is open.
"The vehicles do not provide an audible chime when the driver's door is opened and the push-button start's electronic ignition key code is stored in the system," said Kelli Felker, a Ford spokeswoman, according to Edmunds.
Without the door-chime, drivers could be at risk of leaving the vehicle on with the key fob inside the car, which increases the chance of the vehicle being stolen.
The affected vehicles being recalled were manufactured at Ford's Michigan Assembly Plant.
The Focus Electric vehicles were built from September 15, 2011 through April 24, 2013. The affected C-Max vehicles were built from February 1, 2012 through April 24, 2013, according to Ford.
Around 22,902 of the recalled cars are in the U.S., while approximately 900 are in Canada, according to Ford.
No accidents or injuries have been reported as of press time by the automaker.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has yet to release any information regarding the recall. NHTSA says no current recall information will be posted during the government shutdown.
Ford will notify dealers to modify the software to fix the issue.
