In 2021, more than 9,300 fatal and serious car accidents occurred in Oklahoma, with 1,700 of these occurring in Oklahoma City. As the most populated city in the state, it's not surprising that Oklahoma City is the scene of a significant number of the road traffic collisions, but how can you protect yourself on the road?

Of the 762 traffic fatalities that occurred in Oklahoma in 2021, 206 were speed-related and 407 were alcohol and/or drug related, while 1,270 drivers involved in car accidents were distracted at the time of the incident. By examining the most common causes of crashes, we can encourage people to drive more safely in the future.

However, you can't always predict when or how car accidents will occur, which means it's important to be prepared. Take a look at these five things you should always keep in your car to assist you if you're involved in a crash:

1. First Aid Kit

If anyone involved in the accident has sustained serious injuries, it's advisable to seek help by calling 911 but a well-stocked first aid kit can be used to treat more minor injuries or be applied until help arrives.

2. Emergency Triangle/Flares

It's not unusual for secondary accidents to occur because a driver didn't see a damaged vehicle blocking the road. If you're unable to move your vehicle due to the crash, placing emergency triangles nearby or letting off a flare will alert other drivers and could prevent further collisions.

3. Window Breaker

When a vehicle is damaged, it can prevent the windows and/or doors from opening, thus leaving inhabitants trapped inside. A window breaker is a small but powerful tool that will enable you to break the glass and exit the vehicle in the event of a car accident.

4. Fire Extinguisher

Although modern vehicles do have in-built protection to try and prevent a collision from damaging the fuel tank, it is possible for a crash to cause enough damage that gas leaks from the tank. As it's highly flammable, this can quickly cause a fire to break out. With a fire extinguisher nearby, however, you'll be able to act quickly and mitigate the threat.

5. Camera

When an accident occurs, people aren't always quick to admit responsibility and the shock of the situation can make it difficult to remember exactly what happened. By carrying a camera in your vehicle, you can ensure that you're able to take photographs of the aftermath of the crash straight away, which could help to limit your liability and prove who was responsible for the incident.

Getting Help After a Car Accident

Although car crashes aren't uncommon in Oklahoma City, they can be distressing and traumatic. As well as seeking help from the police and/or EMTs following a collision, it can be beneficial to access legal help too.

A car accident attorney can help to make sure that you're not unfairly held responsible for an accident that wasn't your fault, for example. Furthermore, working with experienced car crash lawyers can help you to make a claim against the person who was responsible so that you're able to obtain financial compensation for the harm you've suffered.
