Bear Mauls Man in Alaska After Being Provoked By Barbecue Meat

A black bear mauled a man at a campground site located in Alaska after being fed meat cooked at a church barbecue.

Department of Fish and Game Spokesman Ken Marsh said the bear was "pretty much goaded" into the attack on June 15 near Eklutna Lake Campground north of Anchorage because the man fed it meat from a church barbecue, according to the Anchorage Daily News.

The man, who will likely be charged with illegally feeding wildlife, was drinking and went for a bike ride before finding the bear in the woods.

Having brought along some meat during his bike ride, he threw a piece at the bear. He then offered the bear another piece and then things got out of hand.

"That's when it (the bear) kind of went ballistic," Alaska State Troopers spokeswoman Beth Ipsen said according to the Associated Press.

After being attacked by the bear, park rangers found the man washing blood off himself at the campground.

Authorities are still trying to sort out what happened as there were no witnesses and the man can't completely remember what happened.

A state biologist was sent to the scene to investigate and find the bear but couldn't after hours of searching according to Marsh. There's no reason to believe the bear will attack again if not provoked.

The man was treated for punctures wounds and scratches at an Anchorage hospital. His name was not immediately released.

The biologist advised people in a press statement to never feed wild animals as they can become dangerous if you do so.
