Southeast Missouri police officials are conducting a search for two murder suspects and a third inmate who escaped through the ceiling from a county jail on Mar. 11 according to the Associated Press.
The escape occurred around 11:30 p.m. at the Butler County Jail in Poplar Bluff. Police have been able to identify the three missing inmates as Matthew Brandon Cook, Rodney Joe Green, and Kade Reaves Stringfellow.
Jail employees were able to discover that the inmates were missing just a short time after their escape, but by then they were long gone according to the Associated Press.
"With the severity of their crimes they were being held for, we do believe it's possible they may have the capability to get their hands on weapons," said Frank Casteel, 911 director for Butler County.
Sheriff Mark Dobbs has yet to comment about the escape, but he did tell local media outlets that the inmates were able to climb through the air ducts to get out. Dobbs blamed "faulty building design" and "walls that don't extend all the way up to the ceiling."
The last two sheriffs have tried getting the jail fixed, but their complaints have continued to be ignored.
Cook was charged with first-degree murder, robbery and other crimes on Feb. 19 after killing 34-year-old Sean Crow at a McDonald's parking lot.
Stringfellow was charged with second-degree murder last July for the death of his son Karson according to CBS News. The convict claimed that he slipped and fell while holding his infant son, but medical workers weren't convinced after seeing injuries and listening to inconsistent statements by Stringfellow.
Green was in jail after breaking into a rural Butler County home this past Feb. Green shot a husband and wife after a struggle broke out before leaving in the couple's pickup truck. The wife was shot in her hand and Green shot the man in the thigh. Both survived the ordeal and have recovered since according to CBS News.
Green was found just a few days after the robbery when a state trooper saw him driving on a rural road. After an extended chase, Green crashed into a utility pole and a tree, which allowed the officer to make the arrest according to CBS News.
