Ever since the March security update for the Google Nexus 6 arrived, many users have been complaining that they can't anymore use Android Pay after installing the update. Owners of the said smartphone have taken to Reddit and Twitter to complain about the issues when using Android Pay after the March security update Android update.
According to Android Police, the update seems to break Android's SafetyNet API. SafetyNet validates whether or not an Android device has been rooted or otherwise had its software tampered with.
For sensitive applications like Android Pay, if SafetyNet does not pass, then the app is immediately disabled. The third-party developers can also integrate Safety Net into an app to make sure that person data is not compromised.
The March Android 7.1.1 update for the Google Nexus 6 was returned though it comes less the SafetyNet related issues. The image and OTA file N6F62U is now available for download as reported by Android Police.
This will be a temporary patch until developers can find out why the API is not working. There are also other features and fixes that patch carries, something that the users will need such as a subset of vulnerabilities most Android-powered devices have to tackle with.
Furthermore, the reason of the SafetyNet breakdown is still unknown. Android Pay is considered one of the most important features for individuals today since this provides the flexibility they need to complete each transaction anywhere. The March security update was supposed to fix major security issues, including one which involves hackers from remotely executing malicious code through email, media files and browser.
For now, there is no turn around time on when the March security patch for the Google Nexus 6 will come out. Before the API issue started, Google had already fixed 22 big major issues and 11 problems. The smartphone just reached the end of software support but still receives monthly security updates.
