Toonami recently made a surprising announcement on Facebook on Friday that it will end its airing of the all-time popular anime series, One Piece, permanently starting on March 25. Toonami will replace the series with Tokyo Ghoul and will begin airing the anime series on the same day.
The reason for this is due to low ratings of the anime series and its slow moving arcs. Toonami began streaming One Piece way back in May 2013 starting off with Episode 207. The premiere gathered 995,000 viewers.
The programming block recently added both Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn RE:0096 and Dragon Ball Super to its schedule on January 7. Toonami is anticipated to debut the Mamoru Oshii and Production I.G's five-part hybrid live-action micro-series called the Sand Whale and Me on March 18.
According to Goboiano, the co-creator, and producer of Toonami, Jason DeMarco, took to Twitter to share that One Piece will leave the network. He added that the decision has to be made.
Meanwhile, Tokyo Ghoul will be joining Dragon Ball Z Kai, Dragon Ball Super, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Gundam Unicorn RE:0096, Naruto Shippuden, and Ghost in the Shell. The new anime series is a dark fantasy created by Sui Ishida. It follows Ken Kaneki as he adapts of becoming a half-ghoul, which is a species that feeds on human flesh.
The dark anime series features far less content than One Piece. With only two seasons, the fluid series introduces fans to the world where horrifying monsters exist known as Ghouls.
The series debuted way back in September 2011. Weekly Young Jump first published the manga before it was it was turned into an anime series by Pierrot.
Studio Pierrot changed Tokyo Ghoul into a 12 episode anime in July 2014 before a second season ran in January 2015. Both seasons were licensed and dubbed by Funimation.
