NBC is reportedly talking to shock jock Howard Stern about taking over "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" when Fallon leaves for "The Tonight Show," according to The New York Post.

The newspaper claims Stern is being "groomed" to replace Fallon by NBC, who will be replacing Jay Leno once his "Tonight Show" contract ends in 2014.

Fallon shouldn't get his hopes up yet however, as Conan O'Brien was promised the same thing when Leno was set to retire the first time back in 2009. That didn't work out however, as NBC, who was disappointed with Conan's ratings, decided to bring Leno back in 2010 and fired Conan.

The story claims that Stern has toned himself down enough to the point where he might not have to rely on X-rated material to get through a talk-show based around jokes directed towards celebrities, politicians, and current events.

"We were in a hotel and all these little kids recognize him now as the judge from 'America's Got Talent,'" said Beth Ostrosky, Sterns wife said to The New York Post. "Usually it's their dads. But now it is screaming little kids. People are now seeing him for who he really is."

The New York Post also claims that the "suits" at NBC feel Stern has turned over a new leaf, and if he wanted to, he could be relied upon to run a late night show.

Stern hosts his own satellite radio show on Sirius XM and is also a judge on the popular "America's Got Talent" program.

This wouldn't be the first time Stern has had a television show, as he hosts "The Howard Stern Show" on Saturday nights on channel 9 from 1990 to 1992. From 1994 until 2005 E! ran a half-hour version of his radio program, with most of the good material being edited to make it more suitable for their audience.

Stern's agent, Don Buchwald, has declined to comment on the rumors that Stern is heading to late night. NBC's late night programming chief Doug Vaughan also decline to speak to The New York Post.
