Following the announcement that a Google Pixel 2, if that is what it is called, is on the way, numerous leaks and rumors surfaced on the net, with the latest being the removal of its headphone jack. This would certainly mean Google is taking a leaf from Apple's book. We have rounded up the recent rumors and "leaks" pertaining to the upcoming Google Pixel successor.
Release date. Rick Osterloh, Google Hardware VP, last week pointed out the since there is an annual rhythm in the mobile industry, "You can count a successor this year." This doesn't require rocket science to figure out. But word on the street is Google Pixel 2 is expected to debut this October, just about the same time Google Pixel came out a year ago.
No headphone jack. How many times do they have to really kill jack? When this rumor came out, it sparked massive controversy all over. Well, first off, Apple was criticized for going wireless.
Now, if speculations are accurate, that the original Google Pixel is the Android version of the iPhone 6, then Google Pixel 2 could be the Android version of iPhone 7 or 8, whichever you prefer? Thus, no headphone jack.
9To5Google reports that they have seen internal documents coming from their anonymous source that Google is planning on ditching the 3.5 mm jack for the 2nd-gen Pixel units. Note that this is only from one source, as the report acknowledged. So, we can't tell for sure if this is for real.
Water resistance. There is no surprise if Google Pixel 2 will sport water resistance as other competing devices already are boasting this specific feature. Also, according to a report, the upcoming flagship device could come with the highest standard of water resistance available for smartphones, the IP68.
Snapdragon 835 processor. Yes, we have all heard this before. The upcoming device is expected to be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 processor, simply because a tipster said, "some with Snapdragon 83X chips, others with Intel chips." Also, the previous Pixel phones had the Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 chipset.
Android O/Android 8.0. Previous Pixel and Nexus devices ran on Google's latest Android updates. So, it could be expected that the Google Pixel 2 would also run with the latest, that being the Android 8.0 or Android.
Gestures, fingerprint sensors, and camera. The original Pixel device sported a fingerprint sensor that also allowed the user to swipe on it to pull down the notif bar. This could very well be also coming to the second-gen Pixel. Wccftech reports that Pixel 2 could come with a dual camera, replacing the original camera on the Pixel device.
Edge-to-edge QHD OLED display. Since Google Pixel 2 would compete with Samsung Galaxy S8 and iPhone 8, it is probable that the flagship device would do the same, feature edge-to-edge display, or as Samsung calls it "infinity display."
