Latest iOS 10.2.1 Update Has Reduced Unexpected iPhone 6 And 6s Shutdown Issues By 80 Percent

For several months, iPhone 6, 6s, 6 Plus, 6s Plus users have been facing a problem that causes their smartphones to shut down unexpectedly. But Apple has successfully addressed the problem with the latest iOS 10.2.1 update, released to the public on January 23.

According to Apple, the shutdown issue that is solved by the 10.2.1 update is different from the problem that forced the company to recall a select number of iPhone 6s devices. The giant tech said some batteries had been overexposed to controlled ambient air during the production process, resulting in the need for a physical battery replacement. This is the very reason why the newer batteries of the iPhone 7 smartphones were not affected.

A statement was provided to TechCrunch, stating that the iOS 10.2.1 update has resulted in an 80 percent decrease of unexpected shutdowns on the iPhone 6s and a 70 percent drop reduction of unexpected shutdowns on the said devices. The report also says that older batteries found in the aforementioned devices were experiencing sudden spikes in activity, which could have caused the emergency shutdown.

Many issues are causing iPhone shutdowns, and it explains why many users also complained of the problem after the recall, and why the iPhone 6s issue seemed more widespread than Apple propose in the recall program. There were even speculations that Apple was planning a battery exchange program, something the company quickly debunked.

Furthermore, Apple has tweaked its power management system, letting the company create a way to auto-restart without needing to connect to power. The auto-restart feature will be available on iPhone 6 and 6s in iOS 10.2.1 and will be added to the iPhone 6 Plus and 6S Plus in iOS 10.3.

Alongside the fix, a new battery info screen will also be added to iOS 10.2.1 in the next few days, allowing customers who need to replace their battery know that it's not anymore functioning as expected. The warning can be seen in the battery section of the Settings app, which will only be displayed to customers who need new batteries. For customers who are experiencing shutdowns on their iPhone 6 and 6s device should immediately upgrade to iOS 10.2.1.
