Apple finally released their first major update to iOS 6 this week, making the iOS 6.1 available for Apple devices like the iPhone 5 and different versions of the iPad.

iOS 6.1 comes after five beta test updates since the launch of iOS 6 in September. This includes 4G LTE support for 36 different iPhone carriers and 23 different carriers for the iPad according to a report by CNN.

"iOS 6 is the world's most advanced mobile operating system, and with nearly 300 million iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices on iOS 6 in just five months, it may be the most popular new version of an OS in history," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, in a press release.

To download the app, go to your device's settings and then select General. The update will be waiting in the Software Update section.

At least 1GB of storage is needed to download iOS 6.1 according to Apple.

Apple has also added a way to rest your Advertising Identifier, which will act as a control room for informing advertisers about your web activity. Other changes include new boarding pass behavior in Apple's Passbook software, slight changes to Safari, and new music playback controls from the lock screen according to Apple.

Updates have also been made to Apple's mapping software as well.

"iOS 6.1 brings LTE support to more markets around the world, so even more users can enjoy ultrafast Safari browsing, FaceTime video calls, iCloud services, and iTunes and App Store downloads," said Schiller.

Apple's last update took place in December when iOS 6.0.2 was released. The software, which went out to users only on Apple's newest devices, took care of a number of bugs like a key one that prevented iPhone 5 users from letting them install over-the-air software updates according to CNET.com.
